The pre-industrial history of Swindon is as rich and vivid as its 19th century railway history but is a lot less well-known. In this talk, author and historian Nicola Cornick looks at the way in which the village of “Swinedune” evolved from Anglo Saxon times to become a thriving medieval market town, how the English Civil War affected it’s development and whether there is any truth in the persistent stories of smuggling and secret tunnels beneath the Old Town. From the Villet House to the ruins of Holy Rood, Nicola discusses how much of Swindon’s history is still visible today.
Nicola Cornick is an author, historian and trustee of the Friends of Lydiard Park. She has lived in the Vale of the White Horse for over 20 years and draws on local history as inspiration for her writing. Her website is: www.nicolacornick.co.uk
