A Century in Print (1920-2020)- Mark Golder

Mark Golder: Chippenham Museum

A Century in Print (1920-2020) – collecting for Chippenham

On the 24th of May,2023, via Zoom, the Friends can look forward to a talk from Mark Golder. A collector of prints and artworks, Mark has donated widely to SM&AG, the Pallant House Gallery and Chippenham museum. Mark has given a talk to the Friends in the past – read about it on the Friends’ blog here.

Alan Fuller’s curatorship

Mark tells us that, during Alan Fuller’s curatorship of Chippenham museum, he and it have put much effort into building up a collection of artworks created by artists either living or working – or both – in north Wiltshire.

From late 2021 to early 2023, the museum held three temporary exhibitions telling a story of British printmaking. It does so through three particular moments in time.

  1. The 1920 and 1930s via etchings by Robert Tanner and his contemporaries.
  2. The 1940s to the 1980s via prints created by the staff of Bath Academy of Art during its Corsham years.
  3. The early 21st century via works created at the Ink on Paper Press based outside Corsham.

Mark’s talk will encompass local art history, creating a collection, curating exhibitions, and printmaking as a multifaceted medium. These themes strike Mark as being relevant for a Swindon audience as their own new museum and art gallery opens. Well …. we live in hope eh!
