List Swindon: 75 Years of Protecting England’s Heritage

Martin Newman, Historic EnglandHow many Listed Buildings are there in Swindon and which were the first? How does listing work, what can be listed and what does it mean? In a talk to mark the 75th anniversary of Listing. Martin Newman from Historic England will look at the history of listing and the other forms of heritage designation on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) with examples from Swindon. He will also explain about the listing process and seek to dispel some of the widely held misconceptions about listing.Martin Newman is originally an archaeologist but has spent much of his career working with information about the historic built environment as well as archaeology. He works for Historic England where he was formally part of the listing department and he is responsible for all the information on the NHLE. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities, a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and a Fallow or the Royal Society of Arts.
