Howard’s Way: The Paintings of Charles Houghton Howard & Post War Abstract Painting

Professor David Manley will give an insight into his research into Charles Howard and his paintings with particular reference to his work in the Swindon collection and the development of British abstraction between, and especially after WW2.  Howard occupies a unique place in this history straddling the Atlantic Ocean, seen as an American in the UK but as an emigre in the USA.  He is equally oddly situated between the Surrealist tradition and a kind of English Romanticism that suggests he may well be far more important as a painter than he has, at least, until recently been credited with on either side of the ‘pond’.
